Dr. Matthew James Shefcik is an active trumpet player and instructor based in the Miami, FL area. Currently second trumpet with the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, he has also been a member of the Miami Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the New World Symphony, Florida Grand Opera, the Punta Gorda Symphony, the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra, and the Quincy (IL) Symphony Orchestra. In addition to numerous recitals, Matthew has performed as a soloist on J. Clifton Williams’ Dramatic Essay, J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, and André Jolivet’s Concertino for Trumpet, Strings, and Piano. His chamber music experience includes recitals and outreach performances as a founding member of the Category 5 Brass Quintet, an ensemble based in Miami, FL, and as 2nd Trumpet in the LaMoine Brass Quintet, the faculty brass ensemble at Western Illinois University. A finalist in the 2006 International Trumpet Guild’s Orchestral Excerpts Competition, Dr. Shefcik is also a three-time semi-finalist at the National Trumpet Competition.
During the summer of 2024, Dr. Shefcik served on the brass faculty for the Alfredo de Saint Malo Festival in Panamá, giving masterclasses and performances throughout Panamá City. Matthew’s collegiate teaching experience includes time as Adjunct Trumpet Instructor at Bradley University in Peoria, IL, Adjunct Trumpet Instructor at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO, and trumpet studio teaching assistant at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and Western Illinois University. Dr. Shefcik earned both a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and an Artist Diploma from the Frost School of Music, where he studied with Craig Morris. While at the Frost School of Music, Matthew was also a Henry Mancini Institute Fellow and taught musicology classes. Dr. Shefcik’s doctoral essay, A Performance Guide to Selected Trumpet Excerpts from the Orchestral Music of John Coolidge Adams, explores the trumpet writing of one of today’s most important and frequently performed composers. Currently, Dr. Shefcik serves as a Trumpet Teaching Artist for the Miami Music Project, an El Sistema-based organization that strives to bring about social transformation through music education and performance. He also serves as Adjunct Trumpet Instructor at Westminster Christian School in Palmetto Bay, FL and Weston Christian School in Weston, FL.
Originally from Chicago, IL, Matthew earned a Master of Music degree from Western Illinois University, where he studied with Bruce Briney, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Roosevelt University, where his principal instructors were Channing Philbrick and Mark Ridenour. Dr. Shefcik’s other instructors include Tage Larsen, Sam Pilafian, Tim Conner, Bill Campbell, and Mark Schubert.
